Biography
BIO: LISA LOUCKS CHRISTENSON
Lisa Loucks Christenson is a writer-photographer based out of Rochester, Minnesota. Lisa’s motto is: “Wherever I go, whatever I do, one goal has always driven me onward: I never let myself come home empty-handed! I find something every day to share — every day. Stories and photo opportunities are everywhere. Whether it’s a trip outside or a trip abroad I walk silently, within; I keep looking, looking for something—something to share.”
Lisa earned an Honorable Mention, in 32nd place (from over 19,000 entries) in the Inspirational Category for her story, Narrow Paths, in the 71st Annual Writer’s Digest Competition. Lisa has received letters – from a legally blind woman who was moved by this story, from an out-of-place worker who kindly said, “Great Story” – and e-mails from countless others who loved the inspirational message.
She is also a two-time winner of the quarterly Writer’s Weekly 24-Hour Short Story Contest. She earned an Honorable Mention with her story, Carousel Riders, and second place with her story, The Model Maker. After The Model Maker was published, e-mails poured in for several weeks from people who begged for more, others who wanted to see her story as a book, and others as a movie. Lisa is currently working on turning this story into a novel.
Reader Comments:
“Dear Lisa, I thought THE MODEL MAKER was reminiscent of a shortened, “TWILIGHT ZONE” episode or a Ray Bradbury story — and that ain’t bad! The only thing wrong with this story is that it was too short! I wanted more!!!”
“Dear Lisa, Congratulations on your award for your short story THE MODEL MAKER. I enjoyed it both as a writer and a miniaturist. I shared the story with several friends who are doll house enthusiasts and they loved it also. One thinks it would make a lovely illustrated book for adults, another said she would like to see a room box based on your story. One friend, a published author and miniaturist, just lost her husband two weeks ago, she was especially moved and promises to reread it many times. Good luck with your future writing.”
Lisa’s credits include: Self Magazine, Esquire, Diversion, Perspectives, Career World, ACHRNEWS, Grolier, Inc., Harcourt, Disney, Prentice-Hall, Pearson Education, Writer’s Weekly, Writer’s Digest, Hazmatt, Function-Thru-Form, My Creative Company, Trips and Journeys, Travel World International, Times Plain Dealer, Woman’s World, City Pages, Fillmore County Journal, Christian Schools International, Holt, Rinehart Winston, Marshall Cavendish, HSUS, Kind News, , Kirchoff/Wohlberg, A Lot of Fun and Games, Rigby Education, Rourke, and more.
In June 2003, Lisa’s photography portfolio was selected by the editors of Photo District News. The PhotoServe Web site is located at: www.photoserve.com. The site goes on to announce that these portfolios are: “The most compelling photography of the month chosen by PDN’s Editors.” Lisa has also won over 100 Grand Prize, First, Second, Thirds, and Honorable Mentions awards for images she’s exhibited in regional and national competitions.
Lisa is currently working on the book, Who Ate the Moon?, with her daughter. It came about one night after they had left a buffet. As Emme Jo looked to the sky she asked, “Where’s the moon?” Lisa noticed the celestial body was crescent-shaped, and answered with a question: “Did you eat the moon?”
For a few years now, Lisa has been gathering video clips, photos, and stories from people all over the country who shared with her their stories of faith and encounters. Some are near-death experiences, one shares her experience of attempted murder, a rape victim reunites with the son she conceived from the rape, a man flat-lines twice and comes back to create art from pieces he’s gathered from memories of his near-death experiences. There are stories of random acts of kindness, stray animals who change their new owners’ lives, and more. Some of the stories are simply messages of hope – for anyone who is searching for a better life.
When she is not writing, or photographing a project, Lisa is behind the scenes of her sixteen-year-old communication company, e-Compass Communications, the largest answering service and business support center in Southeastern Minnesota. Her clients include plumbers, electricians, veterinarians, web design firms, publishers, etc. Having the support center provides her with staff for her research needs, appointment setting, and backdoor opportunities for inside stories in several industries. She writes for several of her clients, producing their sales sheets, creating flyers and web sites. Having accounts spread out across the country provides Lisa fresh leads for her never-ending pile of original articles and stories.
