2025 April Featured Journalist of the Month: Morgan Tilton

Raised in Southwest Colorado, I grew up in the San Juan Mountains and moved to the state capitol to study at the University of Denver. Three degrees, four years, and a couple of trips across the world later I launched my writing business. I specialize in outdoor industry news and adventure travel with work featured in Outside, The Red Bulletin, Men’s Journal, Runner’s World, Bicycling, Outside Business Journal, Forbes, Trail Runner, 5280, and Backpacker among others. I have contributed to more than 89 publications to date.

In 2025, I was named the North American Travel Journalist of the Year by the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA). My travel writing has been recognized with a Silver Award from the 2023-2024 SATW Foundation Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards Competition, as well as 19 NATJA awards. Most notably, a Gold in the Accessible Travel category; and two features covering my and four friend’s SUP first descent of the wild Escalante River received four awards.

I have worked as a journalist for more than 16 trade industry events including live reporting for Outdoor Retailer and Snowsports Industries America (SIA). I filed features as Snowboard Editor of Teton Gravity Research for the 16-’17 winter season.

In 2018, I was selected as an Adventure Travel Trade Association two-time media delegate for the Adventure Elevate conference in Banff, Alberta, and the Adventure Next conference in Jordan.

I served as the monthly WeRunFar columnist for iRunFar for nearly six years, covering profile features on influential, impactful individuals in the sport worldwide.

I’ve been a frequent contributor to many national publications including Trail Runner, Runner’s World, Forbes, and Bicycling.

Today, I’m a GearJunkie Senior Editor of the Buyer’s Guides specializing in SnowSports including management of the GearJunkie Ski & Ride Week. Locally, I write for Crested Butte Magazine and teach outdoor writing workshops for the annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival.

1. What got you into travel writing?

My first formidable travel experience was an EF Tours trip to Italy and Greece that I took through my high school when I was 14 years old. I loved learning and writing about the history, culture, and people. When I came home that summer, I saw a Conde Nast Traveler issue on our living room table and realized that was the type of writing I wanted to do.

2. What’s the most challenging part of being a travel journalist for you?

The most challenging part of travel journalism is juggling domestic needs between trips: Bottlenecks are inevitable with a busy travel schedule!

3. What is the most rewarding aspect of travel journalism?

The continuous opportunity to learn and document the world and voices around us makes travel journalism incredibly rewarding.

4. What is something you wish people knew about travel journalism?

Travel journalism requires continuous discipline, high energy, motivation, creativity, and is an act of service.

5. What have you enjoyed most about being a NATJA member?

Being a NATJA member has enabled me to stay connected with travel journalists around the world even when I am homebound.

6. How have cross-cultural experiences shaped your point of view of the world?

My cross-cultural experiences have enabled me to feel trust and hope for humanity.
